I am a member of the Birmingham Theory Group and my research interests include domain theory, denotational semantics of programming languages, lambda calculus, topology, cryptography, and Computer Science education.

Research projects and visitors
- Marco Abbatini won an EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (funded by UKRI) to visit for two years from September 2023.
- Igor Arrieta won a four-year fellowship from the Basque Government and will visit from April 2023 for two years.

Some history
- I studied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt (then called Technische Hochschule Darmstadt) from 1978 to 1984, writing a Master's Thesis under the supervision of Klaus Keimel.
- With the help of a scholarship by the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes I was able to spend one year at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh working with Dana Scott. I completed my PhD back home in Darmstadt under the supervision of Klaus Keimel.
- I worked as a postdoc in Samson Abramsky's group at Imperial College 1989 to 1990, returning to Darmstadt to complete my Habilitation in 1994.
- I was appointed Full Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham in 1995, and together with Marta Kwiatkowska, Valeria de Paiva, and Eike Ritter founded the Theory Group.
- My main area of expertise is domain theory which has roots in denotational semantics of programming languages and topological algebra. Klaus Keimel has written a short history of how these two fields came together. A more detailed account can be found in the monograph Continuous Lattices and Domains. A precursor to this book was the write-in Seminar on Continuity in Semilattices (SCS).
